just learned that james somerton had over a thousand patreon subscribers

what is it I'm doing wrong? Am I not weird enough about women?!

This post is probably just a joke about Somerton's misogyny, but I've seen all kinds of comments along those lines before so I'll use it as a jumping-off point:
it's ok if you think his videos were bad, with bad props, bad lighting, bad haircut, bad use of camera, bad use of camera budget, and so on,

but his "sources" were good.

Even with botched presentation, or mixing sources with debatable success and coherence, the end result let some of the original quality shine through. Unless you are many good writers in a trench-coat, you can't hope to match both his output and his quality (that is, the quality of the writing he was plagiarizing). He even had a writer! If you're working alone you're not only competing with someone who doesn't have to come up with their own points nor writing it themselves, you're also one assistant short.

From that angle, it's not really surprising he had that many subscribers. It's both the output and (though not always) quality of a whole team.
